Schools urged to embrace sustainable approaches in education
Education officials and international delegation have urged schools to maximize resources in efforts to incorporate sustainable development in learning.
Speaking at St Mary’s girls’ primary school in Nakuru, Fidelis Nakhulo, the Deputy Director Quality Assurance and Standards said schools should maximize resources including land and engage students in creative activities as part of development.
“Schools should exploit student’s potential by giving them space to engage in activities that will help them become responsible in future. Activities that include arts, farming and conservation measures nature children in to becoming dependent citizens in future,” Nakhulo said.
Nakhulo, who was accompanied by a delegation from Israel to check on sustainable projects in schools that have embraced the idea added that efforts of conservation can be best implemented by children.
“Through partnerships with Israeli embassy on the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development, ESD, teachers get to learn on the needs to allow students to learn new things apart from the ones taught in class,” he said adding that a number of schools across the Country still have huge idle tracts of land that can be used for sustainable projects by students.
Every year, Nakhulo said, 25 teachers across the Country are taken for ESD trainings in Israel where they are exposed to various conservatory and sustainable projects that are worth implementing in Kenyan schools.
He said St Mary’s is among few schools that have successfully embedded sustainable development in its extra curriculum activities.
“The school has brilliant projects which apart from conserving the environment, also generates income to the school
. If other schools across the Country replicate such, then unemployment issues will be solved since students already have the skills that can boost in generating revenue”, Nurit Hashimshony, one of the Israeli delegation said.
The delegation commended the school as one of the best environmentally sensitive schools across the Country having put in place recycling measures and active entrepreneurial activities as a result of farming and creative arts.
At the school, the pupils have creatively put up garden fences using recycled bottles as well as decorations using recycled materials including papers, tiles, egg shells and sisal.
“We engage the girls in various extracurricular activities so as to open up their minds. We create an environment for them so that they build on it. They practically exploit the theory knowledge have”, Ms Damaris Ochieng, the headmistress, and also a beneficiary of the ESD training said.
Hope Wangare, a class eight student said the skills have helped them to economically budget on the necessities as students as well as in environmental matters.
“We do various activities from recycling materials and at times we even sell them to our teachers whereupon we use the proceeds to buy things including litter bins. We also never lack balanced diet because we farm our produce during our free time as well as selling some produce for start-up projects”, Wangare said.
